Raymond Keith Gilyard was born in New York City in 1952. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from City University, MFA from Columbia University, and doctorate from New York University. Gilyard became a faculty member at CUNY, Medgar Evers College, were he helped to launch the National Black Writers Conference series in 1986. He later became a professor of writing and English at Syracuse University, and Penn State University. He received numerous awards, including the American Book Award (1992), and was inducted into the International Literary Hall of Fame for Writers of African Descent.
