Afaa Michael Weaver was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1951. He entered the University of Maryland in College park at age 16. He studied there for two years before leaving to work in a Baltimore factory and marry. He would later go on to establish 7th Son literary press and work as a freelance journalist for the Baltimore Sun papers and other publications. After receiving an NEA fellowship, he published his first book of poetry, Water Song. Weaver finished his BA at the University of the state of New York (Now Excelsior College) and taught at NYU and other colleges. He studied playwriting at Brown University. 

Weaver taught at National Taiwan University as a Fullbright scholar. He has written 12 poetry collections and had two plays produced professionally. He is has won many awards including a Pushcart Prize, May Sarton Award, and a Pew Fellowship.
